Dans une foisonnante partie doctrinale, qui manifeste une remarquable maîtrise théologique, Bernard nous montre l'humilité comme un chemin qui conduit à la vérité. Il déploie ensuite avec verve ses talents de caricaturiste, sa finesse psychologique et sa déjà grande expérience pastorale pour raconter une vertigineuse descente : celle du moine qui dégringole, au rebours de l'humilité, les degrés de l'orgueil. Car dans un sens ou dans l'autre, c'est un seul et unique chemin que l'homme parcourt dans sa vie spirituelle : la clairvoyance du jeune abbé de Clairvaux se révèle d'une saisissante actualité.
