La lutte contre les vices : tel est l'objet principal du traité adressé par Evagre, sans doute peu avant 394, à un destinataire mal connu, nommé Euloge. L'homme de lettres, né dans le Pont et devenu ermite en Egypte, y invite au discernement des "pensées" envoyées par les démons pour troubler la quiétude contemplative de celui qui s'est retiré loin de l'agitation du monde. Offrant le témoignage de son expérience personnelle et celui de quelques apophtegmes, le "philosophe du désert" prône ainsi l'impassibilité inspirée du stoïcisme dont il est pétri, tout en dépassant celui-ci grâce à la relation à Dieu et aux autres. Le petit opuscule qui fait suite à Euloge dans les manuscrits, Les Vices opposés aux vertus, lui sert en quelque sorte de guide de lecture. Dans cette série de défi nitions pittoresques, en deux ou trois mots Evagre saisit chacun des neuf vices, chacune des neuf vertus qu'il distingue. Connu pour avoir, par ailleurs, dressé une liste de huit péchés devenue classique en Orient - mais réduite à sept en Occident -, il livre ici la quintessence de son enseignement et, sous une forme quasiment poétique, une rumination spirituelle sur l'acquisition des vertus. Le texte édité ici est fondé sur l'étude de l'ensemble de la tradition manuscrite et des nombreuses traductions en langues orientales qui ont été faites de ces deux traités. Charles-Antoine Fogielman, ancien élève de l'Ecole des Chartes et de l'EPHE, est prêtre du diocèse de Paris. Ce volume est le fruit de sa thèse de doctorat.
