L'intérêt de ce recueil, suscité par le premier centenaire de Jacques-Paul Migne en juillet 1975, dépasse de loin les circonstances d'une telle célébration. Une première partie est consacrée à l'étude des Pères de l'Eglise avant les grandes Patrologies grecque et latine de l'abbé Migne, soit celle qui produisit des patrologies semblables (P. Petitmengin), soit celle marque par le contexte de la Réforme (J. Boisset), soit enfin celle du XIXè siècle (J. Leflon, G. Cholvy). La seconde partie de l'ouvrage offre des aperçus neufs sur les principales formes d'activité de Migne en son temps, son journalisme (P. Pierrard), sa lutte contre les idées gallicanes (B. Noël), son oeuvre d'éditeur surtout (C. Savart, M. Chalon, P. Brasseur). A cette oeuvre majeure est encore consacrée la troisième partie. Celle-ci s'ouvre sur une étude, documentée de première main, au sujet des collaborateurs des deux Patrologies grecque et latine (A. Hamman). Elle se termine par une analyse fort éclairante de la traduction latine que la Patrologie de Migne propose pour la Vie d'Antoine par Athanase d'Alexandrie (P . Force). La quatrième partie apporte des élcairages complémentaires dont le plus remarquable aide à situer Migne dans son enracinement local et à saisir les vertus natives de sa personnalité (J. Fouilheron). Le volume a été préparé sous la direction de André Mandouze (Université de Paris IV-Sorbonne) et de Joël Fouilheron (Université de Montpellier III).
