Description
Né en 949, à Galaté, en Paphlagonie (Asie Mineure), de parents appartenant à la noblesse provinciale byzantine, Syméon vint étudier à Constantinople où il mena longtemps une vie mondaine et dissipée. Son père aurait souhaité le voir entrer au service de l'empereur. Mais, à 27 ans, insatisfait de cette vie superficielle et à la recherche d'un guide spirituel, il entre comme novice dans le fameux monastère de Stoudios. Alors, sous la direction de Syméon le Pieux, dit aussi le Studite, il pratique un ascétisme rigoureux et s'adonne à une prière ardente. Son attachement à son directeur spirituel déplut aux autres moines, et Syméon, refusant d'abandonner la direction de Syméon le Pieux, dut quitter le monastère. Il entra alors, de nouveau comme novice, dans le monastère voisin de Saint-Mamas, tout en restant sous la direction de Syméon le Pieux. Trois ans plus tard, devenu moine, puis prêtre, il est élu, à 31 ans, higoumène de Saint-Mamas avec l'approbation du patriarche de Constantinople. Il exercera cette charge pendant 25 ans. Ses "Catéchèses" , reflet de son propre itinéraire spirituel et mystique, sont d'abord destinées à restaurer la vie spirituelle dans le monastère de Saint-Mamas, ce qui n'alla pas sans oppositions ni incompréhensions. Plus largement, elles sont un guide indispensable à qui veut connaître la grande tradition spirituelle de l'Orient grec.
