Voici encore un de ces grands classiques sortis de l'école Warburg et dont la traduction française manquait, comme hier celle d'un ouvrage de même famille, le Saturne et la Mélancolie, de Klibansky, Panofsky et Saxl. Edgar Wind partage avec A. Warburg et E. Panofsky la conviction que "notre oeil voit ce que lit notre esprit" et que l'on ne peut séparer la jouissance esthétique d'une connaissance précise de ce que l'oeuvre entend représenter. Il s'attache donc à reconstituer la culture néo-platonicienne dans laquelle baignaient naturellement les grands artistes du Quattrocento et à discerner la signification des mythes et allégories : les Trois Grâces, par exemple, pour des gens qui révéraient la Trinité. Poésie païenne et poésie chrétienne se mêlent dans ces oeuvres d'initiés, pour qui les vérités les plus hautes ne se livraient que cachées : Orphée, l'Amour aveugle, le Printemps et la Naissance de Vénus, l'Amour dieu de la mort, Protée, Pan, Marsyas écorché, Bacchus ivre, Léda et la Nuit. Pour saisir le sens de ces "mystères" d'antan et de leur épanouissement chez un Michel-Ange, un Botticelli ou un Titien, il nous faut une initiation supplémentaire. Nul ne pouvait être meilleur guide qu'Edgar Wind, esprit exigeant et clair, subtil et nuancé.
