Ces deux maîtres spirituels, Thérèse (1515-1582) et Jean (1542-1591), sont aussi deux écrivains de premier plan. Ils furent deux individus engagés dans leur siècle, liés dans la contemplation comme dans l'action, et résolus, pour réformer le Carmel, à affronter le monde auquel ils appartenaient. C'est Thérèse qui initie la Réforme. Elle rédige le Livre de la vie pour y exposer son existence, ses péchés, pour y consigner aussi les «faveurs» que le Seigneur lui a accordées, autrement dit ses expériences mystiques, dont la célèbre «transverbération» : il importe de démontrer aux adversaires de la Réforme et aux tribunaux de l'Inquisition qu'il ne s'agit là ni des simulations d'une illuminée ni de manifestations du démon. Son Livre des fondations décrit non sans humour les difficultés qui émaillent l'installation des couvents de carmélites déchaussées, tandis que Le Château intérieur expose dans une prose empreinte de poésie sa conception du cheminement de l'âme jusqu'à l'union avec Dieu. Quant à Jean de la Croix, dont Thérèse perçut très vite le rayonnement spirituel et dont elle fit son confesseur, c'est pendant son incarcération dans un cachot, alors qu'il est soumis à la solitude la plus absolue et à un traitement inhumain par les opposants à la réforme du Carmel, qu'il compose l'essentiel du Cantique spirituel. Splendide poème du désir et de l'extase, dans lequel expérience poétique et expérience mystique ne sauraient être dissociées, c'est, comme Nuit obscure et Flamme d'amour vive, l'un des textes les plus intenses de la poésie universelle.
