Le Commentaire de l'Evangile de Jean est le plus volumineux et le dernier des commentaires bibliques de Maitre Eckhart, redige probablement lors du deuxieme magistere parisien (1311-1313), puis remanie petit a petit lors de son sejour a Strasbourg, puis a Cologne. Il constitue le sommet de l'oeuvre mystique de l'auteur et developpe notamment l'idee que la grace, apres la grace de la creation et de l'Incarnation, est celle de la divinisation, de la filiation divine. Dieu opere en effet grace sur grace (Jn 1, 16): en Marie, la naissance de Dieu dans l'ame a precede la naissance de Dieu dans la chair, mais en nous l'Incarnation a rendu possible l'inhabitation divine. Les analyses exposees dans ce commentaire ont de quoi surprendre le lecteur, peu habitue a meler la liberte philosophique a l'interpretation des Evangiles. Beaucoup de theses furent d'ailleurs jugees heretiques, a l'epoque, par les autorites ecclesiastiques, qui intenterent a Eckhart un proces d'Inquisition a Cologne puis en Avignon (1325-1329). Ce volume propose la premiere traduction integrale en francais de ce long commentaire, qui permet de mesurer l'ancrage biblique de la mystique eckhartienne. Eckhart prend soin de rediger une Table des autorites en debut de livre, completee ici, en fin d'ouvrage, par une serie d'index pour que chacun puisse entrer a sa guise dans l'ouvrage: s'y trouvent recenses les auteurs et les personnages bibliques, mais aussi les couples de notions et les questions evoquees dans le corps du commentaire.
