Ponge, ou la rage, dans ses proêmes, d'exprimer la chose, qui nous prend à partie pour "atteindre enfin par la parole au point dialectique où [la] situent sa forme et son milieu, sa condition muette et l'exercice de sa profession juste". Ponge, ou l'homme en chemin vers l'homme dans ce dire où l'objet montre "ce qu'il a de brut, de différent" au terme de l'investigation aimante du regard poétique, où se trouve conjuré le sort de l'"opiniâtrement clos". Ponge, c'est aussi, en marge des écoles, mais au coeur de l'histoire littéraire sans cesse revisitée, la quête du langage adéquat, quête incessante que souligne la genèse des textes. Les mots, le style doivent rendre compte du dessein humaniste du poète : être le héraut - plus que le chantre - de ce qui l'entoure et qu'artisan il détoure pour l'accoucher de son secret/projet - "une exacte compréhension du monde sans doute est à ce prix". "L'art de vivre d'abord y devait trouver son compte : il nous fallait relever ce défi". Le texte, jusqu'en sa matérialité, se veut pièce à conviction dans le réseau mouvant des recueils toujours recomposés, avec, en ligne de fuite, le rêve mallarméen du Livre.
