On a souvent défini l'art de Marivaux comme celui de "peser des oeufs de mouche dans des balances de toile d'araignée". Pourtant, parmi les écrivains du XVIII ? siècle, avant Rousseau, c'est Marivaux qui a le mieux dénoncé l'exclusion sociale et l'aliénation. Réflexions sur les conditions d'exercice de la liberté, ses pièces mettent en question des pouvoirs qui paraissaient assez généralement fondés en nature : le pouvoir du père ou de la mère tel qu'on le concevait sous l'Ancien Régime, celui des maîtres sur leurs valets, celui des hommes sur les femmes. Il n'est donc pas surprenant que ce théâtre libérateur donne la première place à l'analyse de la phase initiale de l'amour - lorsqu'il émerge à la conscience dans une atmosphère de trouble, de plaisir et de peur. Car chez Marivaux, l'amour souffle où il veut. Cause de bouleversements et de souffrances, il révèle la fragilité et la résistance des êtres pour devenir, lorsque le jeu des masques laisse apparaître la nudité des coeurs, le signe d'une immense liberté.
