De Marivaux, on ne voit souvent qu'un aspect, une formule dont il reste la victime. On ne le trouve pas sérieux. Il passe de la malice à la tendresse, de l'esprit à l'émotion, des valets aux princes, des coeurs innocents aux vieilles débauchées. Pourtant, analyste du coeur, moraliste, peintre des milieux les plus variés, Marivaux sait nous toucher par une sensibilité qui ose prendre une forme plus rare - qui n'avoue pas son nom ou semble l'ignorer. Son théâtre consiste à faire surgir et à rendre lumineux ce qui se cache sous la routine et les convenances. Marivaux est un inlassable inventeur d'épreuves. On pourrait fort bien voir en lui quelque suprême manipulateur. Marivaux explore les zones indistinctes entre le rêve et la réalité, les instants de théâtre dans le théâtre et ceux où plus personne ne sait très bien si tel personnage fait semblant ou non. Proche de Pirandello, qui a construit son oeuvre sur la proclamation du triomphe du théâtre sur la vie et du caractère universel du masque, Marivaux, dramaturge, reste, encore aujourd'hui, à découvrir.
