Amusant, facile à lire, rapidement lu, parfois arrangé, déguisé, traduit, adapté, plagié, le récit court appartient en somme au domaine public. Au XVIII ? siècle, il est un divertissement, un jeu de société, et doit être bref, nouveau, intéressant et varié. Un auteur de nouvelles joue sur tous les registres, réalisme, moralisme, satire, idylle, allégorie, féerie... En somme De tout un peu, comme le proclame le titre d'un recueil de 1766. C'est après avoir fait les beaux jours des périodiques que les nouvelles étaient réunies en recueil. L'abbé Bordelon voyait clairement ce que le genre, sous cette forme, avait à offrir au lecteur : "On pourra quitter mon livre quand on voudra, sans craindre de perdre le fil du discours, reprendre la lecture, sans être obligé pour se remettre sur les voies de relire ce qui précède. [... ] Quoi de plus commode ? " Le présent volume, qui mêle des nouvelles signées de grands noms (Marivaux, Diderot, Prévost, Sade, Mme de Staël) à celles d'auteurs moins (re)connus, voire anonymes, a recherché le même agrément, la même nouveauté, la même commodité de lecture que les recueils du XVIII ? .
