Le succès a son revers. La réputation de conteur attachée à Daudet a fait méconnaître son talent de romancier qui l'avait pourtant imposé au public de son temps. Rien de plus simple que de se procurer les Lettres de mon moulin, mais trouve-t-on aussi facilement L'Évangéliste ou L'Immortel ? Reproduisant les mêmes modèles fautifs - très tôt, Daudet a cessé de contrôler personnellement les rééditions -, les éditions qui se sont succédées ont transmis les mêmes erreurs. Àla désinvolture des éditeurs répond la désinvolture des critiques. En guise d'analyse, on ne trouve trop souvent qu'un survol dédaigneux. Un auteur célèbre et pourtant mal connu, des textes devenus introuvables ou diffusés sous une forme défectueuse, telle est la situation qui justifiait cette édition.
