Fontanes vielgestaltige literarische Arbeit durchzieht wie ein roter Faden Biographisches: sei es in den frühen Feldherrn-Gedichten, sei es in den zahlreichen Feuilletons, und sei es vor allem in den "Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg". Er hat biographische Lexikonartikel verfasst und in Auftragsarbeiten die preußischen Könige portraitiert. Diesem Phänomen wird in der vorliegenden Publikation, an der sich renommierte Fontane-Forscher aus mehreren Ländern beteiligten, erstmals aus sehr verschiedenen Blickwinkeln nachgegangen. Das Resultat ist erstaunlich: Bis jetzt eher vernachlässigte Werkteile erfahren eine gründlichere und aufschlussreiche Untersuchung. Überdies erlauben beinahe alle Beiträge einträgliche Rückschlüsse auf das erzählerische Hauptwerk. Verfahren der Biographieforschung werden genutzt und andere Fachdisziplinen wie die Geschichts- oder Kunstwissenschaften einbezogen. Damit ist ein neuer, keineswegs schon ausgeschöpfter, produktiver Zugang zu Fontanes komplexem literarischen und journalistischen Werk eröffnet, dem bald weitere, anknüpfende Arbeiten folgen dürften.
