Il a étudié la peinture, le dessin et la sculpture à Brooklyn dans les années 1960, avant d'acquérir un Polaroid en 1970 et de se lancer dans la photographie. A partir de 1973 et jusqu'à sa mort, en 1989, il a exploré le monde des fleurs selon divers procédés, dont le Polaroid et le tirage Dye-transfert. Ses compositions de roses, d'orchidées, de marguerites, de tulipes et de nombreuses espèces communes ou rares, soigneusement élaborées, ont bouleversé la façon dont nous percevons habituellement le thème, classique et familier, des fleurs dans l'art. Cette oeuvre magnifique et surprenante est rassemblée dans cet élégant ouvrage, avec un avant-propos de Dimitri Levas, ami proche de Mapplethorpe, et une introduction d'Herbert Muschamp.
