Peintes par milliers, dessinées par millions, adorées et méprisées en même temps, les fleurs représentent l'un des motifs les plus ignorés, les plus délaissés et même dénigrés de l'art du XIXe siècle. Une injustice flagrante, comme en témoignent les très nombreuses photographies reproduites dans ce livre, qui révèlent une prodigieuse variété d'espèces, d'arrangements et, évidemment, de talents. Botanique avec les savants du premier Empire, décorative dans les intérieurs cossus de la Monarchie de Juillet, la peinture de fleurs est une des plus grandes réussites du réalisme. Se déployant en cascades colorées sous les fastes du second Empire, elle se montre faussement rustique au temps d'un impressionnisme qui ne la tolère guère hors des plates-bandes ou des étangs de Giverny. Quant aux soleils de Van Gogh, c'est à l'époque de Madeleine Lemaire qu'ils flamboient. Bien que célébrées par Proust, Francis Jammes et Odilon Redon, les fleurs quittent l'avant-scène, découragées par les clous dont Picasso les affuble en guise de pistils. Ce magnifique ouvrage richement illustré consacre ses dernières pages à un répertoire complet des quelque cinq cents artistes cités, suivi d'un index et d'une table des illustrations détaillée.
