Ce catalogue luxueux, imposant et abondamment illustré, en anglais et portugais, offre une vue d'ensemble de l'oeuvre de l'artiste, de ses premiers collages et polaroïds aux photographies florales, nus érotiques et portraits qui en ont fait l'un des photographes les plus marquants du siècle dernier. Il comprend des textes de l'historien de l'art Jonathan K. Nelson et de Susan Sontag. Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) prend ses premières photographies avec un Polaroid. Ses premiers polaroïds sont essentiellement des autoportraits et des portraits de son amie proche, la chanteuse, artiste et poète Patti Smith. Ces premiers travaux photographiques ont généralement montré en séries et présentées dans des cadres pour "finir" la photographie. Il acquiert ensuite un vrai boîtier et photographie son cercle d'amis et de connaissances. Il s'agit notamment d'artistes, compositeurs, mondains, stars du cinéma porno et des membres de l'underground SM. Certaines de ces photographies sont considérées comme choquantes pour leur contenu, mais extrêment raffinées dans leur maîtrise technique. Au cours du début des années 1980 il réalise des images très classiques, des nus sculpturaux masculins et féminins, des natures mortes de fleurs, des portraits officiels d'artistes et de célébrités.
