Description

Product Description This book offers an overview of the challenges in the emerging regime of international criminal justice as a tool of sustainable peace. It illustrates the impact of the regime on international law and international relations, focusing on the obstacles to and concerns of its governance in the context of the maintenance and restoration of international peace and security. The author advocates for an appropriate interaction strategy between the United Nations and the Rome Statute institutions as a matter of international mutual concern and for the sake of human security. In multiple and inter-linked country situations the failure of strategies to prevent mass atrocity crimes have severely compromised the safety of civilians, including their individual fundamental rights. In several countries - such as in Libya, Syria, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast and Mali - civilians have severely suffered the consequences of such failure.Furthermore, the right of humanitarian intervention that it is sometimes claimed the international community has is now challenged and qualified by the responsibility to protect civilians in situations of mass atrocity crimes. Such an international norm represents unfinished business in global politics and is considered by many to be far from capable of preserving the rule of international law. The preservation of the rule of law requires discussions and the advocacy of global values in international relations, such as multilateralism, collective responsibility, global solidarity and mutual accountability. About the Author Since 2004 Dr. Marrone is employed in the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, the first permanent and treaty based international judicial institution established to help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community. In 2016 Dr. Marrone has been a programme advisor at Cordaid development agency as an expert of international security and transnational justice. Dr. Marrone has published extensively on issues of public international law and international humanitarian law and lectured at various universities, including UNIBO, the European College, Groningen and Leiden Universities.Dr. Marrone completed a research project at Leiden University within the PhD Program Exploring the frontiers of international law. He holds a doctorate in law and his policy work analysed the intersection between law and politics in particular the progress achieved and achievable by the formulation of the global humanitarian policy and by the legal frameworks responding to international threats and crimes. The title of his PhD in public international law is "The Governance of Complementary Global Regimes and the pursuit of Human Security: the interaction between the United Nations and the International Criminal Court." His multidisciplinary work provides an assessment of the international tools currently at disposition by the world community for the governance of international criminal justice in the context of human security and sustainable peace, dealing with intra- and eventually inter-state civil wars caused by autocratic, totalitarian and criminal regimes. His areas of expertise cover international law and international relations, law of international organisations, European policy, law and institutions, human security and global affairs. Dr. Marrone holds a MA in European Law, Economics and Politics from the European College of Parma where he was, among other duties, in charge of drafting policy and research addressing practitioners, academics, public institutions and civil society strengthening the EU framework for research and innovation. He also holds a MA in Political Science and International Relations from the University Orientale of Naples and he performed the Erasmus program at La Sorbonne University of Paris.
