Description
Acne is a skin disease characterized by whiteheads or blackheads, pimples, oily skin and scarring. It occurs when hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. It affects the areas of the skin, which has a relatively higher number of oil glands. Genetics is considered to be the primary cause of acne. Other factors such as infections, hormonal activity, stress, environmental factors and medications for other conditions can also cause or worsen acne. Many treatment options are available for the management of acne, such as medications, lifestyle changes and medical procedures. Azelaic acid, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are applied directly to the affected skin. Antibiotics and retinoids may also be applied to the skin or taken orally.
