Being a leader of several research projects, Prof. Benjamin has published several research papers in international and national journals of high repute, and several industrially-significant novel strains of bacteria/fungi were discovered and characterized; apart from 5 patents and 1 book to his credit. He is one of the pioneering researchers pertaining to the bioremediation of hazardous phthalates. Having completed his M.Sc. Degree (University of Kerala), he secured his M.Phil Degree (Cytogenetics) from the same University. In 1998, he secured his Ph.D. Degree (Biotechnology, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala; CUSAT) under the supervision of the world renowned biotechnologist, Prof. Ashok PANDEY at National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram. In between, Prof. Benjamin also secured Post-graduate Diploma in Public Relations and Journalism (PGDPRJ), from the Public Relations Society of India. He is the recipient of many national and international awards/fellowships, serving as Member of Editorial Board of prestigious International Journals such as Advances in Enzyme Research, SM Journal of Nutrition and metabolism, and also the recipient of prestigious PDFs from Japan (JST, worked at National Food Research Institute under renowned scientist Dr. Chikafusa FUKAZAWA); Germany (DFG worked at University of Muenster under renowned Professor Dr. Friedrich SPENER); Research Fellowship from India (CSIR), Fellow of the International Society of Biotechnology (FIBST), Invitation Fellowship from JSPS, Government Japan, etc.
