Description

Dramatically Queer: Plays by Contemporary Russian-Speaking Playwrights is the first anthology of LGBTQ-themed plays written by queer and non-queer Russian-speaking writers in the 21st century. Featuring original plays by Roman Kozyrchikov, Andrey Rodionov and Ekaterina Troepolskaya, Vladimir Zaytsev, Olzhas Zhanaydarov, Natalya Milantyeva, Valery Pecheykin, and Elizaveta Letter this anthology includes work that explores gay, lesbian, trans, and other queer lives in prose and in verse. Addressed just as much to adults as they are to children and teenagers, these plays showcase a diversity of tones and genres and have each been presented at the prestigious Lyubimovka and Remark Festivals as well as full-scale productions in Moscow and other Russian cities. From a confession-style solo play to a poetic satire on contemporary Russia; from a play for young people to more conventional dramatic texts, this important anthology features work that was written around or after 2013 -- the year when the law on the prohibition of propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors was passed by the Russian government. Together they use queerness as an imaginative resource to explore narratives of homo and transphobia, control and shame, but also of humanity and kindness, love and self-esteem. About the Author Tatiana Klepikova studied Slavic Literature and Culture in Passau (Germany) and Language Pedagogy, Linguistics, and Translation in Yaroslavl (Russia). She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto, where she is working on a monograph about contemporary Russian queer theater and drama.
