Consta de 10 capítulos en que el autor revisa los temas fundamentales de la pragmática: actos de habla, descortesía, discurso, contexto. Añade a ellos un capítulo sobre variación pragmática, campo en el que es un experto y termina con una sección dedicada a la enseñanza. Cierra el libro con un bloque realmente interesante y poco frecuente en los manuales universitarios: Aprendizaje, enseñanza y métodos de pragmática. Este acercamiento a la didáctica se hace en una doble dimensión: la enseñanza de la pragmática, algo fundamental cuando se enseña una segunda lengua (dirigido al docente), y la dirección hacia la investigación: Métodos de recolección de datos y el proyecto de investigación (dirigido al alumno).
