This means that an excessive emphasis on ethics, rather than assuring ethical conduct, tends instead to create interpersonal settings marked by emotional assault. Because of this, talk about ethics often expresses ambivalence about ethical conduct, which makes the familiar combination of preoccupation with ethics and ethical failure unsurprising. About the Author David P. Levine is a professor at the Josef Kobel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He has published books and papers on group and organizational dynamics; the psychology of teaching and learning; ethics, tolerance and difference; and the psychology of work. His most recent book is Object Relations, Work and the Self (Routledge 2010).
