Review An in-depth overview of the key properties, design strategies and fabrication of metal oxides for medical and sensing applications From the Back Cover <p><i>Metal-oxides for Biomedical and Biosensor Applications</i> gives an in-depth overview of the emerging research in the biomedical and biosensing applications of metal oxides, including optimization of their surface and bulk properties.</p> <p>First, there is a general discussion of the biomedical applications of metal oxides for use in cell cultures, antibacterial and antimicrobial treatments, dental application, drug delivery, cancer therapy, immunotherapy, photothermal therapy, and tissue engineering. Then, metal oxide-based biosensor development is reviewed.</p> <p>Advanced and biofunctionalized nano/micro structured metal oxides are finding applications in microfluidics, optical sensors, electrochemical sensors, DNA-based biosensing. Imaging, diagnosis and analysis of the data from these sensors are also touched on. Finally, rational design strategies for metal oxides for fabrication of biosensors are reviewed with emphasis on the relationship between structure, morphology and composition to the performance of metal oxides for biomedical and biosensing applications.</p> <p>Additional relevant issues concerning the research challenges, technology limitations, and future trends in metal oxides and their composites towards biomedical applications are also discussed. </p> About the Author Dr. Kunal Mondal is a Staff Scientist at the Idaho National Laboratory in the Materials Science and Engineering Department. His research interests include the micro/nano fabrication of functional materials, materials for extreme environments, soft and stretchable electronics, microfluidics, carbon MEMS/NEMS for soft electronic skin and flexible transistors. Ghenadii Korotcenkov received his Ph.D. in Physics and Technology of Semiconductor Materials and Devices in 1976, and his Doctor Habilitate Degree in Physics and Mathematics of Semiconductors and Dielectrics in 1990. Long time he was a leader of scientific Gas Sensor Group and manager of various national and international scientific and engineering projects carried out in Laboratory of Micro- and Optoelectronics, Technical University of Moldova, supported from International Foundations and Programs such as CRDF, MRDA, IREX, ICTP, INTAS, INCO-COPERNICUS, COST, NATO. From 2007 to 2008, he was an invited scientist in Korean Institute of Energy Research, Daejeon, South Korea. Then, until the end of 2017 Dr. G. Korotcenkov was a research professor at the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Gwangju, South Korea. Currently Dr. G.
