Description

Explore the deep connection between Vincent van Gogh and Japanese art. During the winter of 1886-87 in Paris, Van Gogh acquired 660 Japanese prints from the art gallery of Siegfried Bing. While his initial attempt to deal in these prints through an exhibition at Le Tambourin was not a commercial success, the collection became a profound source of inspiration for his work. This book examines how Van Gogh studied these prints up close, becoming captivated by their colorful, cheerful, and unusual imagery. While he took some prints with him to Arles, the core of the collection remained in Paris with his brother Theo. This volume provides insight into the collection that shaped his artistic vision.
