Fujishima Takeji: 100 Curated Paintings Fujishima Takeji was a Japanese painter who played a central role in the development of Western style painting in Japan. Born in Kagoshima in 1867, he became one of the leading figures of the yōga movement, helping to introduce and refine European academic techniques within a Japanese context. He studied under influential teachers in Japan before travelling to Europe, where he absorbed elements of Impressionism and classical Western art. These influences shaped his mature style, which combines careful observation, luminous colour, and a refined sense of composition. Fujishima’s work often features elegant female figures, mythological themes, and landscapes, rendered with both realism and a decorative sensitivity. His paintings balance Western structure with a distinctly Japanese grace, creating images that feel disciplined yet poetic. Fujishima Takeji: 100 Curated Paintings presents a carefully selected collection of his work, offering a focused view of his unique artistic vision and contribution to modern Japanese painting. Part of the My Private Art Gallery series, this volume presents Fujishima’s paintings with careful digital restoration and a thoughtful gallery style format. The aim is to recreate the experience of viewing paintings slowly and attentively, much like walking through a quiet gallery.
