Description

This scholarly work by Routledge examines the S h-r zag, a foundational text in Zoroastrian worship that honours divine entities through spiritual principles and ritualistic practice. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the Avestan S h-r zag, analysing its structural, linguistic and historico-religious elements whilst establishing its approximate chronology and original ritual function within the broader Avestan textual tradition. The analysis then progresses to the Middle Persian Pahlavi translation of the text, exploring how the sacred content was transmitted and interpreted across different linguistic and temporal contexts. This reference work offers readers a deep understanding of Zoroastrian theology, textual transmission and the evolution of religious practice through careful examination of primary source materials and their historical significance.

Key Features

The book analyses both Avestan and Pahlavi versions of the S h-r zag text to trace its linguistic and spiritual evolution.

Structural and linguistic examination of the Avestan S h-r zag establishes the text's approximate chronology and original ritual functions.

This Iranian Studies reference work explores the relationship between the S h-r zag and other Avestan texts within the religious canon.
