Description

The William Makepeace Thackeray Library Volume I collects early fiction and journalism from one of the 19th century's most versatile literary figures. First published in 1996 by Routledge, this volume draws from Thackeray's prolific output during the 1830s and 1840s, when he worked simultaneously as editor, sub-editor, writer, reviewer, foreign journalist, illustrator, versifier and reporter. Over fourteen years, Thackeray maintained an unbroken literary presence across magazines, journals and newspapers, establishing himself as a multi-talented contributor to Victorian periodical culture. Edited with an introduction by Richard Pearson, this Routledge Revivals edition presents carefully selected extracts that illuminate Thackeray's formative years and demonstrate his range as a writer before achieving major success as a novelist. The collection offers readers insight into the foundations of his satirical voice and journalistic skill.
