Description

Explore the social history of women's education in Britain through this Routledge publication. Between 1870 and 1939, women's presence in universities grew to represent nearly one quarter of the student population. While Oxford and Cambridge faced ongoing prejudice and hostility, younger civic universities often took a different approach. Many of these institutions advertised a policy of making "no distinction of sex" regarding admissions, appointments, or educational policy. This work provides a detailed look at a period often overlooked by historians. Based on extensive archival research, it examines the shift from a perceived social revolution to the reality of female integration in higher education. It is an essential read for those interested in women's and gender history and the evolution of British academic institutions.
