Routledge Conservation Landscapes Eastern Himalayas - Sustainable Development

This academic study examines the well-being of eastern Himalayan forest-dwellers through the lens of Amartya Sen's and Martha Nussbaum's Capabilities Approach. Published by Routledge, the book investigates educational and health opportunities and substantial freedoms available to farmers and pastoralists in the Senchal and Singalila Protected Areas of North Bengal, India. The research addresses how conservation initiatives affect human capabilities and quality of life in this youngest of the world's mountain ranges, whilst also exploring the Forest Rights Act as a mechanism for delivering well-being improvements to vulnerable communities. This work combines environmental sustainability with social development perspectives, offering insights into transition processes in Northeastern India and the complex relationship between landscape conservation and human flourishing.
