Description

Explore the complexities of tenth-century Byzantine warfare with this scholarly study from Routledge. This book examines the Sylloge Tacticorum, a significant military manual, as both a practical handbook and a literary work. By using the Sylloge as a case study, the text connects military strategy to the historical challenges Byzantium faced during wars with the Arabs. Beyond combat, the research links these manuals to broader aspects of Byzantine society, including education, politics, and the conventions used in historical narratives and literary productions. The author investigates the origins of the Sylloge, identifying its authorship and the specific time period in which it was written. Readers will learn how the Byzantines incorporated passages from classical and earlier works, providing insight into why they chose to imitate previous texts in their own military documentation.
