Routledge Britain's Secret War against Japan 1937-1945 - Military Intelligence

Britain's Secret War against Japan, 1937-1945 offers a comprehensive reassessment of how Britain's defence establishment adapted its strategy and understanding of Japanese military capabilities throughout the Pacific War. Author Douglas Ford examines the critical period before Japan's December 1941 invasion of Southeast Asia, when British military leaders fundamentally underestimated Japanese armed forces due to limited prior combat experience and the opacity of Japan's war planning. The shock of Singapore's fall in February 1942 marked a turning point, forcing a complete revision of British assumptions about Japanese military prowess. This Studies in Intelligence title reveals the intelligence failures and strategic miscalculations that shaped Britain's early Pacific War response, providing historians and military scholars with essential insights into wartime decision-making and the evolution of British defence policy against an unfamiliar adversary.
