Description

Eccentric Laughter: Queer Possibilities in Postwar British Film Comedy offers a fresh perspective on cinema from the SUNY series, Horizons of Cinema. This book challenges the idea that postwar British comedies were apolitical. Instead, it argues that these films presented subversive and iconoclastic queer experiments in living for a nation rebuilding itself after years of conflict. By exploring new ways to watch these comedies, the text examines how representations of eccentricity offered possible queer futures for a Britain destabilized by social upheaval. This scholarly work moves beyond previous critical descriptions to reveal the political depth found in perennial favorite films of the era.
