This groundbreaking study offers the first comprehensive English-language analysis of Timon of Phlius, the third-century BCE poet and philosopher who introduced Pyrrho of Elis and Early Skepticism to the ancient world. Dee L. Clayman meticulously reconstructs the Silloi, Timon's three-book hexameter parody in which he satirises philosophers across all periods during an imagined journey through Hades. From over 100 known titles, only fragments survive: a catalogue elegy called the Indalmoi and 133 verses from the Silloi itself. Clayman uses Diogenes Laertius's outline and surviving book numbers to piece together these fragmented works, shedding light on how Timon's wit and philosophical critique shaped early sceptical thought. Essential reading for scholars of ancient philosophy, classical literature, and the history of scepticism, this volume demonstrates how poetic form served Timon's philosophical mission and reveals the intellectual landscape of the Hellenistic period.
