Description

This scholarly work presents a comprehensive translation of the Xiang'er commentary to the Daodejing alongside Jao Tsung-i's extensive supplemental notes and historical analysis. Jao Tsung-i (1917-2018) provides a hermeneutically rich examination of the Xiang'er Commentary, an invaluable text discovered in the Mogao caves at Dunhuang during the final years of the Qing Dynasty. The study illuminates the early reception and interpretation of the Daodejing whilst exploring the life and influence of Zhang Daoling, the commentary's author. Jao Tsung-i's research uncovers the significant impact of texts such as the Scripture of Great Peace (Taiping jing) on Celestial Masters Daoism and reveals how these influences shaped the construction and development of the Xiang'er commentary itself. This volume opens a distinctive window into early Daoist thought and religious practice.
