La légende rapporte qu'au retour d'une rencontre avec Lao zi, Confucius le décrivit à ses disciples comme aussi insaisissable qu'un dragon, "chevauchant les vents et les nuées". On pourrait en dire autant du dao, "la voie" : l'impossibilité à l'appréhender est le gage de sa toute-puissance. Si Confucius employait déjà ce terme, c'est avec Lao zi, Zhuang zi et Lie zi (autrement dit : Lao tseu, Tchouang tseu et Lie tseu) que le dao prend une signification beaucoup plus large pour devenir à la fois un principe et un moteur. Avec eux naît "l'école du dao". La primauté doctrinale de leurs trois textes ne s'est jamais démentie jusqu'à nos jours. Tandis que le Lao zi peut presque être considéré comme un traité prescriptif, le Zhuang zi propose une oeuvre riche en couleurs et en figures fantasques, et le Lie zi un ensemble de récits où le merveilleux côtoie le quotidien. L'influence de ces trois oeuvres est immense, y compris en Occident.
