Book on EMC Design to meet requirements of the European EMC Directive for CE marking of electrical, electronic and electro-mechanical products. This book is aimed at manufacturers of electrical, electronic and electro-mechanical products that fall under the scope of the European EMC directive. While providing a step-by-step procedure for CE marking, the book focusses on requirements of EMC directive and provides insights into EMC test methodologies given by EMC standards. Finally, EMC design methodologies are discussed which, when followed, ensure that the product complies with the EMC tests. The book is divided into two parts – “Part I” deals with the CE marking process and EMC standards & test methodologies while “Part II” deals with the EMC design aspects. Part-I of the book begins with a chapter that introduces the reader to the nuances of the CE marking process, the ways or methods to approach conformity and to compile supporting documents that illustrate the process. This is followed by the chapter on EMI/EMC fundamentals which introduces the reader to basic concepts of EMI and EMC. Thereafter the chapter on EMC directive helps the reader to understand the legal requirements of the EMC directive. The next chapter which is on EMC standards discusses various harmonized EN standards which are in force and which are used to demonstrate technical compliance. The four chapters that follow, throw light on various EMI/EMC test methodologies like emission (EMI) measurement and immunity/susceptibility (EMS) testing. Understanding these is absolutely essential so as the designer can incorporate appropriate design measures in order to comply with the EMC tests. These EMC design measures are discussed in Part-II of the book which comprises of five chapters on EMC design namely filtering, shielding, PCB design, grounding & bonding and cable routing which can be considered as the five pillars of EMC. The EMC Design book focusses on practical aspects of EMC design rather than theoretical derivations and enables design teams to directly incorporate EMC design measures without worrying about theory. Although the focus is CE marking of products, the EMC Design book can also be used as a standalone guide for EMC compliance. The EMC Design book concentrates on EMI hardening at the design stage itself, providing practical insights and structured compliance strategies which will enable design teams to achieve EMC compliance efficiently while avoiding expensive retrofits at the end of the development cycle. And last but not the least, the CE marking procedure is not complete unless the entire process is documented through the so-called technical file or technical documentation. The appendix on technical documentation explains how this documentation is to be compiled as required by the EMC directive.
