Working with AI Data (Technical)

Working with AI Data is a holistic guide to understanding, preparing, and responsibly leveraging data for artificial intelligence. In an era where data is often called the “new oil” or “new soil,” this book argues that true intelligence begins with data literacy—the ability to critically assess, ethically handle, and creatively transform raw information into actionable insight. Structured across ten comprehensive chapters, the book takes readers on a journey from the philosophical foundations of data to the practical realities of building sustainable AI systems. It begins by exploring what data is, how it is classified, and why the metaphors we use to describe it matter. Readers then learn to diagnose datasets using statistics and visualization, uncover and mitigate hidden biases, and master the essential crafts of data cleaning and feature engineering. Later sections delve into the modern data stack—databases, big data architectures, sourcing strategies, annotation pipelines, and the challenges of maintaining AI in production. Throughout, the book emphasizes the role of the practitioner as a data citizen, someone who builds systems with accountability, advocates for fairness, and understands that data is not merely a resource, but a record of human activity with real-world consequences. Working with AI Data is the definitive resource for aspiring and experienced practitioners alike who seek to build AI that is not only powerful and accurate, but also transparent, equitable, and enduring.
