Majosta They Love Me, They Like Me, They Hate Me: The Quest for Validation can Feel Relentless

The hum of the notification vibrated against Clara’s thigh, a tiny tremor that mirrored the larger one in her chest. A new like. Then another. And another. The counter on her latest Instagram post, a carefully curated photo of her perfectly brewed latte art against the backdrop of a trendy café, climbed steadily. Each upward tick brought a small surge of dopamine, a fleeting sense of validation that washed over her like a warm wave. It felt good, exhilarating even. A rush of belonging, of connection, in that ephemeral digital space. But the high was short-lived. The numbers stopped climbing. The wave receded, leaving behind an unsettling emptiness. The feeling wasn’t just about the lack of further validation; it was deeper, a gnawing sense of incompleteness. The comparison was insidious, a silent, relentless erosion of her own self-worth. This, my friends, is the siren song of likes and shares. It's a powerful, pervasive melody that lures us into a cycle of seeking external validation, promising fulfillment but ultimately delivering only fleeting satisfaction and a persistent sense of inadequacy. The immediate gratification of a digital thumbs-up taps into our most primal need for connection and belonging, a need that’s been expertly hijacked by the algorithms of social media.
