Description
George Stephanopoulos’ new book is an introductory text to the theory and practice of dynamic chemical and biological process engineering. It is intended to address the educational needs of a first undergraduate course in process dynamics and control, and to complement advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on the same subject. It is also useful for practicing engineers, who want to deepen their understanding in the foundational aspects of process dynamics and control. This book, in many ways, is a major departure from the classical approach of teaching process dynamics and control: It integrates the treatment of chemical and biological process dynamics and control, and covers molecular networks and macroscopic phenomena. All aspects of modeling, analysis, and design of dynamic processes and control systems are in the time domain, which is their natural setting. It provides a clear and comprehensive overview of the control design aspects and hardware elements needed for practical implementations. The design of control systems proceeds in three phases and addresses questions of increasing complexity: (a) Structural analysis, for the generation of control configurations (units, integrated plants, biomolecular networks). (b) Steady state analysis for the selection of the operating points for the design of controllers. (c) Dynamic analysis, for the design of model-based controllers. Articulates clearly the foundational principles on which the design of control systems is based, from the PID to the MPC, through cascade, adaptive, inferential, override, auctioneering, etc. The unifying approach is in the time-domain, and systematizes the design of “nominal” controllers for optimal setpoint tracking and disturbance rejection. It then adjusts the designs to account for modeling errors and thus yield robust stability and performance. The transition from the continuous-time to discrete-time systems for the analysis and design of computer-based control systems, is natural, since it is based on the same foundational principles. The book contains 31 chapters, organized in 10 parts. The chapters illustrate the material with more than 450 figures, diagrams, and tables; and over 200 Examples, case illustrations, and Practice Exercises, many of which are supported by MATLAB® or/and Simulink® files. The book’s website contains the following material: (a) Nine(9) process modules for Practice Exercises; (b) MatLab® functions and Simulink® facilities, used throughout the book; (c) many exercises to practice the book’s material; (d) answers to select exercises; and (e) more than 150 MatLab® and Simulink® files, to illustrate the numerical results of methods presented in the book. These files can be edited to define new processes and solve new problems.
