Introduction to the edible plants of the tropical world, Plants that we consume every day, but know so little about, provides a comprehensive and balanced review of tropical/subtropical plants that are consumed in developed world on a daily-bases, however, are not produced in a given area of consumption. The plants are discussed from different perspectives, including botany, origin, history of cultivation, current distribution, uses, processing, chemistry, basic agronomy and historical as well as current breeding strategies. This book also focuses on providing information in the context of fundamental dietetics. This publication is primarily intended for students of natural and food sciences, but it is also suitable for botanists, natural products chemists and other related disciplines, or simply for anyone who wants to learn more about the plants that commonly appear on our plates, but our knowledge of them is relatively limited. In addition, I hope that the information provided in this book will also in some way provide a helping hand in the ongoing and somewhat forgotten global fight against the malnutrition pandemic.
