For over 300 years, Mount Gay has been crafting deeply aromatic and rich rums on the Northern tip of Barbados in the Caribbean. Mount Gay Eclipse, named after the 1910 total solar eclipse, is a blend of rums distilled in traditional copper pot and column stills, then matured in American whiskey casks. Mount Gay Navy Strength is a limited-edition rum crafted by Master Blender, Trudiann Branker. Aged for two to four years, with a higher portion of older, pot still rums in the blend than traditional Eclipse. This maintains the roundness, balance and typical elegance of the Eclipse style, and adds, bottled at the traditional US Navy Strength, 57.1% ABV, a bold and vibrant flavour profile. The term Navy Strength dates back to a time when sailors would voyage the oceans carrying large quantities of rum in barrels, making them vulnerable to attack from other ships. In the days of cannonballs, wet gunpowder that could not light would be a death sentence in battle. So, it was essential any rum spilled would itself be flammable and so the gunpowder could still be used. This was tested by mixing a little spirit with gunpowder and setting it alight. If it burnt, it was said to be 100 degrees proof. Eclipse embodies Mount Gay golden rums' Bajan style: fresh vanilla, sweet almond, ripe banana and mocha.
