Description
In this hard back edition you will find over 170 oil paintings by Dominic Burkhalter including personal work and scenes from London, Paris, New York, Venice, Rajasthan. Diverse architectural styles combined with atmospheric cinematic scenes provided a huge source of material for his work. Dom’s painting influences include both his parents and tutors at Art School: Keith Micklewright at the Bournemouth College of Art and Patrick George and Euan Uglow at the Slade School of Art in the 1980s. The English tradition of landscape painting from J.W. Turner to Patrick George has held the strongest technical influence over Dom’s work; with the English and Swiss mixture of understated and accurate drawing holding the greatest sway. Other influences include Hopper, Degas, Freud, Vermeer and Holbein. With a Swiss father and South African mother he thought himself as a European first and foremost, but as a born and bred Londoner, the UK’s capital city was always very close to his heart. Paris became a regular destination for a day trip, with the Eurostar speeding to Gare du Nord in two hours. Walking the streets, stopping to browse galleries with lots of bistro stops to refuel and take in the atmosphere. The first time Dom visited New York was the same week that the Woody Allen film ‘Manhattan’ was released, and he remembers walking out of the cinema to see all the scenes from the film. The city and the film had a great effect on him. Venice was his absolute favourite place in the world. His father, being a European tour guide, had encouraged him to ‘Eat where the locals eat!’ Dom loved to take river taxis to Murano and Lido, and getting lost in the labyrinth of alleys, with its maze of canals threading through the city, its rich and diverse architectural style providing a rich source of material for Dominic Burkhalter’s paintings. The Rajasthan, series of work was the culmination of a much enjoyed tour of the ‘Golden Triangle’, starting at Delhi, taking in the magical sights of Bihar, Jaipur, Jodphur, Jaisalmer and of course the famous Taj Mahal at Agra along the way. The friendly people, the wonderful atmospheric markets and the stunningly beautiful temples have been captured here in oils forever.
