This book arises from the need to collect the few remaining findings of a natural event, the eruption of Vesuvius of 79 AD as violent as it is rare to study, always overshadowed by archaeological beauty. It can be useful for a more comprehensive understanding of sites that have a wealth of detail and a range of cultural opportunities unmatched anywhere in the world. It is not a work for volcanologists, even less for archaeologists. It's for curious people. Although volcanologists, who are rarely famous people, can sometimes be important people. The narration is not an archaeological guide (there are already many written by specialists) even if it inevitably borders on the archaeological objects that belong to the history of Pompeii and Herculaneum as much as the products of the eruption. The archaeological references are those that a common visitor, motivated but not specialized, wants to know while visiting the sites. Volcanology is included with a limited use of scientific terms, but if a more in-depth reading of the eruption is desired, some notes are added and, in the appendix, extracts from the main works on the products and consequences of the eruption, as well as some documents referred to in the text. Sometimes brief historical notes are inserted. For any further information, please refer to the bibliography, included in the last volume.
