Seit der Freilegung (1902) des zentralen Wasserverteilungsgebäudes (Castellum Aquae) im antiken Pompeji gibt es nicht nur eine Theorie darüber, wie die Wasserversorgung und -verteilung in dieser Stadt funktioniert hat, sondern die Funktion der Anlage gilt weithin auch als Modell für andere antike Städte. Basierend auf einer langjährigen interdisziplinären Untersuchung der Anlage selbst, des Zuleitungskanals und der Quellgebiete wird diese Theorie widerlegt. Darüber hinaus konnte die Baugeschichte der in mehreren Phasen entstandene Anlage ermittelt werden. Obwohl die technischen Einrichtungen zur Verteilung und Regulierung des Wassers schon in der Antike geraubt worden waren, konnte durch Analyse der Sinterablagerungen im Wasserversorgungssystem sowie durch Strömungsuntersuchungen in einem Großmodell nachgewiesen werden, wie die Wasserbewirtschaftung in Pompeji funktioniert hat.
