Together they retell the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his ideals, his love for Guinevere, the rise and fall of his kingdom and his death at the hands of the traitor Mordred. Gustave Doré’s illustrations for five of the poems were first published in 1867 and 1868. In this orrydian edition they have been sensitively recreated in colour to emphasise the drama and sense of fantasy of Doré’s powerful imagination.
