Illustrations expertly and sensitively recreated in colour specially for this edition Large format (8.25 x 11 in) High quality 90 gsm paper Doré's Bible illustrations were created for La Grande Bible de Tours, an 1866 deluxe folio edition of an 1834 French translation of the Bible. It contains 160 illustrations for the Old Testament, including several of the Deuterocanonical books, and 81 illustrations for the New Testament. The Bible gave Doré the opportunity to depict a vast array of intensely dramatic events. In the Old Testament we see his visions of plague, destruction, storms, battles, murders and massacres, The New Testament too has its violence and storms, but here there is greater emphasis on women, children, miracles, angels and yet more angels. These Bible illustrations were, of course, conceived and intended for publication in black-and-white. In this orrydian edition, all of the original illustrations have been expertly and sympathetically recreated in colour to emphasise both the human and the dramatic nature of the stories. Each illustration is accompanied by the verses from the King James version of the Bible that the scene depicts.
