Cet ouvrage présente quelques-uns des plus beaux scrapbooks de cinéastes d'avant-garde de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle tels Derek Jarman, Agnès Varda, Chris Marker, Stanley Kubrick, ou plus récemment Pedro Costa et Bertrand Mandico. Il propose un voyage à l'origine de la création de leurs films, donnant accès à des documents privés, dévoilant l'intimité au coeur même du processus créatif. Y sont associées des personnalités ayant, à leur façon, participé à l'élaboration de films comme William S. Burroughs (écrivain et scénariste) ou Marie-Laure de Noailles (peintre et productrice), tous deux adeptes du scrapbooking le plus expérimental, mêlant l'émotionnel et le politique. Le livre, comme l'exposition qu'il accompagne (Les Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles 2023), se concentre sur des artistes ayant une pratique radicale, repoussant au maximum les frontières de l'autofiction. Pour Matthieu Orléan, si les films constituent un présent de cinéma, le scrapbook est à la fois leur passé (le lieu de leur invention et de leur esquisse) et leur futur (leur archive). Un chaînon, parfois manquant, mais fondamental pour comprendre la circulation, la survivance et l'apothéose des images contemporaines.
