The three argumentative attorneys (a Jew, a Catholic and a Protestant) fume every morning before work as Sarah tries to convince Ian and Jerome that the Gospel accounts of Jesus' birth are vague enough to be interpreted as describing Joseph as Jesus’ biological father. As farfetched as this sounds to modern ears, this would sound reasonable to a Jew in the 1st century. In this first volume of Resistance to Rome, Sarah, the most junior attorney, investigates the birth narratives from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, revealing the obvious ambiguity in these ancient writings. She points out that never once does the New Testament describe Mary as "chaste", nor does the New Testament describe Jesus as "adopted" by Joseph, but rather as the son of Joseph.
