Majosta Short History of Arms Embargo in Global Conflicts

Oluchukwu Ignatus Onianwa a prolific Nigerian historian interrogated series of arms embargo initiated in some of the armed conflicts that occurred across the globe. Its aim is to enhance the understanding of arms embargo in securing peaceful resolution of conflicts. Arms embargo is a strategic, defense and security issue. For when arms are removed from the theater of conflict it paves the way for warring factions to consider giving peace a chance. Absence of arms in war theater motivates peace negotiators to influence the war combatants into accepting terms of peace settlement for quick termination of war. Warfare is weakened by arms embargo and accelerates humanitarian action for the war victims.Only in the event of a negotiated ceasefire would an effective international arms embargo be practicably effective. While the process takes into consideration numerous vested interests in war, it has to be all encompassing and accommodating in order for the process to run very smoothly. At times, arms embargo initiatives takes time to implement, because of the struggle to accommodate all interests in conflict. Cares are taken not to damage the sincerity and genuineness of implementation. Dispossessing arms from the hands of the belligerents equally takes a lot of conviction through diplomacy and internal negotiations and exertion of influence. Be that as it may, it is always advisable to do everything possible to work towards an effective arms embargo in armed conflict in order to avoid acts of genocide and humanitarian catastrophe. Hence, arms embargo has to be worked out with strong diplomacy and international collaboration to ensure peace and security of the affected territory.Onianwa Oluchukwu Ignatus is a Diplomatic Historian specializing in Transnational Diplomatic and Military History of the Nigerian Civil War and Biafran Studies. He had worked with the Swiss Military Academy ETH Zurich, Switzerland on a book project titled “Captivity in War”; “Visions of African Unity” with the International Studies Department University of Utrecht, Netherland and International Studies Group at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein South Africa; A Tight-Embrace: Euro-Africa Relations” with the Department of Political and Social Science, the University of Bologna, Italy and “Human Rights Breakthrough of 1970” with the Department of International Studies University of Trento Italy.
