In der griechischen Mythologie ist Hekate die Gttin der Zauberei und eine Mittlerin zwischen dem Dies- und Jenseits. Die Band Hekate grndeten sich 1991 und zhlt heute zu den Protagonisten der deutschen Neofolk-Szene. ber fnf Alben hinweg hat die Gruppe folkloristische, mittelalterliche und und klassische Musik, markante Percussion und elektronische Elemente zu einem unverkennbar eigenen Stil verschmolzen, der auf ihrem sechsten Werk "Totentanz" einen vorlufigen Hhepunkt erfhrt.Sieben Jahre nach "Die Welt der dunklen Grten" prsentieren Hekate ihr bislang kompositorisch ausgereiftestes Album, das sich einerseits durch traditionell eingngige Neofolk-Lieder und andererseits hypnotische Stcke auszeichnet. Hierbei gelingt es der Gruppe, die Atmosphre des Apocalyptic Folk der frhen 1990er aufzugreifen, ohne anachronistisch zu wirken. Die mit schwerelosen Synthesizer- und Trommel-Arrangements angereicherte Musik spiegelt die bergreifende Thematik der Texte von "Totentanz" wider: die Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Sterblichkeit im Sinne des "Memento Mori". In diesem Kontext trgt das Ensemble mit einer eindringlichen Interpretation von Joseph von Eichendorffs "Mondnacht" seinem Hang zur Romantik Rechnung, wohingegen das Cover des Albums ein bis dato unverffentlichtes Bild aus der gleichnamigen Reihe des deutschen Symbolisten und Jugendstilknstlers Franz Stassen ziert. Ebenso exklusiv: die Gestaltung des limitierten Buchedition mit ebenfalls bislang unverffentlichten Tuschezeichnungen aus der Reihe "Apokalyptische Landschaften" von Hermann Whler, einem vom Magischen Realismus geprgten Maler, der nur im Geheimen zeichnete und dessen Werk erst jetzt posthum von der Kunstwelt entdeckt wird. Alle Bilder stammen aus Hekate-Snger Axel Menz' persnlicher Kunstsammlung.
